I'm about to start building my first rifle from stripped receivers, mostly to learn more about the platform.
What tools do I need on hand?
I know you see a lot of AR-15 specific tools, are they needed?
Need
Punch set w/hammer (should have at least one brass/delren face)
Bit and driver set that includes torx bits
Torque wrench
Blue loctite
Rocksett or an equivalent
Oil suitable for cleaning firearms
Don't Need But Will Make Your Life A Lot Easier
Vise block
AR armorer's tool
Pivot pin installation tool
Roll pin punch set
Alligator forceps
Silicone cloth (you should have one of these anyways)
There's other tools like gas block installation jigs that you can get but I've never really found the need for one. There's also specialized tools for things like handguard retaining ring installation but that's only really if you're using something where the handguard is drop in rather than free float and you should be using a free float handguard in this day and age.

I tend to be very "belt and suspenders" when I build something so I'll definitely acknowledge that Rocksett may be more of a factor of my tendency to want to make something bomb proof than a strict necessity.
I will say that blue loctite is a must though.
For the actual parts of the gun maybe not as much (though I do apply it to the grip screw) but for things like MLOK accessories and your optic, absolutely. There's no reason not to use it.
