Can I use an overdrive pedal to add more gain to my amp’s distortion signal? How does this work?

I just bought a Peavey 5150 Iconic 80 watt tube for my live rig. I’m wanting to use an overdrive to add more gain to the dirty channel. I’m not sure how this works as I’m new stacking overdrives/gain stages. Previously, I just used the amps distortion and paired with a boost pedal to boost the overall signal but I’m wanting more gain in this case.
Maybe I’m overthinking this but is this possible and if so how does this type of gain stacking work?
