Beginner with a fender mini?

I’ve had an interest in learning guitar and a friend of mine did but said he never touches them so he gave me his electric. I’ve been practicing and doing the basic beginner lessons on it but I found it’s a mini and another friend of mine mentioned that it’s a “kids” guitar.
Does it make that much of a difference? I have been committed and am very interested in improving so should I just buy my own? I have a nephew who I could give the mini to
