Pin code vs biometric login

So I set the biometric login up so that when around people I don't have to expose my pin code to nosey neighbors or hackers (#HLT), but each time when I'm around those folks Grindr doesn't give me the option for my thumbprint and instead insists on my pin code. Ive even deleted the app due to this taking place. Is this normal or are the scammers and hackers on me this quickly?
