Is explore useless?

I'm relatively new to the app, swapped over to explore and dropped the pin right on top of my location. I scrolled through the profiles found someone where they're profile said nearby and started a chat with them, burning my one free unlock, and then I check their profile again and they're 100 miles away from me?
This isn't the first time it's happened either, looking on explore I'll see "nearby" but on the main dashboard they're nearly a whole state away from me, what gives?
