I think if Starcatcher had been released in 2018-19 it would be receiving way more praise. The problem is that we’ve heard TBAGG, which was endlessly creative, experimental and cinematic. The album was a giant leap forward for them musically and their career. Now with Starcatcher, hearing them say they’re going “back to their roots” it always feels like a step back. This album feels very safe from the 5 songs we’ve heard, every song follows the same structure with no suprises so far. I would have preferred them to expand even more on the TBAGG sound that I love and appreciate so much instead of taking a step back to their older sound.
Between the fact this album has had none of the pomp and circumstance of TBAGG, which I believe had a year of singles getting sprinkled out, artwork, and other teases before release, and that Starcatcher seems to follow a similar sound, I see Starcatcher as a small addendum to TBAGG. Still enjoy the sound though
