TLDR, My question is this: is the Labrys perceived as a fascist symbol in Greece today?

Hey! I’m completely new to this subreddit, and I’m hoping some Greek redditors here may be able to answer a question that’s been bugging me for the past few years with no conclusive answer. I am a Greek American woman with VERY limited ability to read Greek so the sources I have access to are limited.

The reason for my asking is that I came out as a lesbian this past year, I’ve always loved tattoos, and I thought that a Labrys was the coolest symbol for lesbianism I’d seen yet. I want to get this as a sort of commemorative tattoo.

BUT then I continued to research and found that, beside it’s long history in mythology, it was the fascist symbol of Metaxism. Beside being someone who fascists hate for my sexuality, I am avowedly anti fascist.

I know that this symbol is understood as feminist in an American context, but I want to go to Greece one day and don’t want Greek people to have the wrong impression of me (especially Greek Jews, immigrants, or fellow leftists)!! So, honestly, do you think it is worth the risk? Does this symbol still have a fascist connotation in Greece or has it been forgotten?

Thank you for reading.
