S2E2: How did he know that?

In S2E2 “Into the Bunker”, the shapeshifter states that the author “hasn’t been himself in 30 years”. I always took this to mean that the shapeshifter knew that Stan had secretly replaced for and had been living as him for the past 30 years.

But that begs the question, how did the shapeshifter know that? We don’t know how long he’s been free (which side note how DID he get free), but I doubt it’s been too long, otherwise he would have escaped the bunker. So if he had been frozen for over 30 years, up to a maybe few weeks max before the mystery gang went into the bunker, how could he have known that the author “wasn’t himself”?
