Recommendations prior to applying for a PhD?

Post Body

Hi all,

Apologies if this is the wrong forum, just let me know where I should post it instead if so.

For context, Iā€™m looking at applying for PhD programs in cognitive neuroscience. My background is a bachelors in kinesiology, and a masters in strength and conditioning/exercise science.

Iā€™m not particularly familiar with the typical process of pursuing the academic route. Is it basically assumed to contact a faculty member with shared research interests prior to even applying?

When I applied for my masters, I applied cold with no prior contact with faculty. Iā€™m assuming this is different for a doctoral degree.

Also, are there any other recommendations from those who have gone this route (PhD) for someone unfamiliar with the process?
