I am a recent astrophysics MS graduate looking for PhD student positions around the world. I will usually apply for open scholarship opportunities or I will straight up email potential PIs with my CV.
In both cases, I will include contacts for references in my CV. How does the employing PI use these references? What happens behind the scenes? Do they email the reference asking about the student's academic performance? Do they have a zoom call?
