Research or internships?

Post Body

I’m a 2nd year mechanical engineering undergrad and have been heavily focusing on undergrad research during the semester and I enjoy it a lot. But as a result, I haven’t had time to do projects and aren’t interested in other design based extracurriculars which made it difficult to get an industry internships.

My goal is to get a PhD in materials science (the reason I’m not interested in design clubs) and I don’t have much interest in industry. Should I forget about applying for industry internships and focus more on research and if so, what should I do with summers to help with grad school applications?
