I earned my b.s. in psychology in 2014 from the University of Oregon. Graduated with a 3.7 gpa and my senior year I completed 20 credit terms (all three terms) of 400 level psychology courses and earned a 4.0 or above each term (Dean’s List); not that that is important really, but worth mentioning I suppose.
When in undergrad I gained only about one year of laboratory research experience in a cognitive and social neuroscience lab. At the time I didn’t realize how important this experience would be and having to work full time simultaneously I just didn’t do much volunteering; which I regret tremendously now.
Anyway I’ve spent much of the last decade working in direct patient care in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. All clinical, not research.
Two years ago I returned to community college and completed a 3 semester anatomy and physiology series, as well as intro to biochemistry, nutrition, and something else I’m forgetting. I earned a 4.0 or above in each course I took.
So I am fascinated with psychopharmacology and neurobiology in general, as well as the behavioral components and would like to earn at least a master’s degree (preferably doctorate) in some type of neuroscience program.
What can I do to give myself a chance at acceptance? Should I take more undergrad courses in the bio chem area?
I know gaining further RA experience would be highly beneficial though I don’t see many opportunities for this. Suggestions?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I have the time and resources to pursue this currently but feel like it’s just a waste of time at this point.
