Multiple trips booked at once?

One unanswered question I have is if multiple trips can be booked and held at a given time. Example:
Could you have both outbound and return flights booked (within 10 days) for an international trip? And if those were both the 5th and 10th day out, could you take a domestic flight in the meantime?
Another scenario would be traveling to a domestic location for the day, with both outbound and return flights booked for the next day.
Anyone have thoughts?
