Distinguishing between arthritis and gout (and does it matter?)

Post Body

Hi guys...

had what I suspect is my first gout flare-up this past week, but I'm not sure how to differentiate it from arthritis. Perhaps it doesn't matter.

I've been diagnosed with unspecified arthritis (RA came back positive but the rheumatologist wasn't convinced?), so I kind of assumed it was that until I mentioned it to my father (also gout/RA). He thought it sounded more like gout.

I guess I'm just trying to distinguish between the two; should I see the rheumatologist in either case?

I don't think we're supposed to ask for/discuss a dx, but if it helps the pain started in the base of my left toe (no injury) and has radiated to my instep/arch. It gets better and worse. Hurts to walk, as well as at rest sometimes (especially after being in flexion).

I am on a low-carb, high-fat diet and suspect that this is related (but have been on this eating plan for over 12mos at this point).

Thanks! :)
