So first thing I want to say is this single blew me away. While I loved humans, I was also just craving some of that classic Gorillaz feel, and charger just wasn't enough to feed my appetite.
Now I'm sure it's subjective, but this song feels to me the closest to the self-titled album/demon-days (Not that the newer influences aren't there, it just sounds close enough for me.)
Now, as for the song itself, I believe sleeping powder* isn't a drug, but rather a 'drug', or a comparison to something that is drug-like.
Now, a majority of Sleeping powder is spent talking about some pretty mundane things. having kids, getting your pants on, living a good life. love with someone, but it all feels like sleeping powder when there's so much going on around you, with the world spinning in so much chaos, don't we all need a little sleeping powder to relax, to focus on ourselves?
That's why 2D's "Gone with the self of the day", because his sleeping powder allows him to focus and block out everything so he can live a "Normal" Life. He's focusing on the portion of his life he must dedicate to himself, rather than his world-minded self that's currently worried about the vast amount of turmoil currently destroying the world around him.
The sleeping powder is apart of that cage, it keeps him docile. And in truth, this relates with the DPRK scenes from the video. These are an entire people who live in a cage, who sold on the idea of what a life should be (Aren't we all?) and told what to believe in (not that again, we all aren't in some way).
And taking into consideration the 'She' in the video might be a lover/wife/partner, the sleeping powder they provide is the normative experience of having someone to love and wake up to/look forward to meeting with. It's not malicious, it's not in an attempt to blind him from the world around him, cause in that instance, he's likely her 'sleeping powder' as well.
However, even 2D knows, sleeping powder or not, fear of what needs to be done or not, he eventually has to "Summon the code" face everything else going on around him, as much as anyone else does.
It's really easy to allow what gives one comfort to be all that one pay attention too, to ignore everything else as if it was useless and only focus on that which eases the pain of the day. That's why the sleeping powder could be a 'drug', it's something that one does to ignore everything else, instead of using it as a method to relax prepare for it.
And that's why the drug PSA starts the video. Drugs aren't the problem, it's about allowing your "Sleeping powder", to be destructive. Being addicted to an experience can be just as bad for someone as being addicted to a substance. It keeps one focused on it, rather than what's needs to be done. It's not bad to escape from what's going on for a short while, but try and escape it forever, and one's only asking for trouble.
