How to turning off GoPro Hero 6?

I'm a goPro newbie so forgive me. I have trouble making sure the GoPro is actually off and not wasting battery. I hold the mode button in and keep holding it. Seems like it goes off. However I come back and hour later and it's still recording and almost dead. This keeps happening. Now I usually just hold till it chimes, then let go. But sometimes it doesn't turn off right away.
Am I doing it wrong?
