Free Up Space, not now

I have used Google Photos for years on my mobile. Love that I could see if it was actively backing up, and then when complete I could Free Up Space on my mobile allowing Google Photos to delete all the backed up photos.
Even when backup is complete, it seems I get an error stating it is backing up and can not free up space. This is annoying, as it never happened in the older versions of Google Photos. Anyone else having this issue?
