Successful garden this year. Only my second year seriously trying to grow food.
Post Body

Current Garden area: 160 sq ft

Expanded the garden in the fall to add 128 sq ft so next year I’ll have 288sq ft of garden area.

Things I grew and how much I got of each in 160 sq ft:

  • Lettuce - more than my family needed. Gave away around 70% of it.

  • Arugula - more then my family needed. It reseeded itself and grew again as a fall crop without any added effort. I gave away around 3/4 of what I grew, my family only needed 1/4

  • radishes: supplied about half our radish needs this year

  • beats: 12 beats or so. Good for a few meals.

  • carrots: enough for 10 meals or so

  • Sage: got way more than we needed. Gave away maybe 90% of what we grew

  • kale: got way more than we needed. Kept around 20% for my family, gave 80% away.

  • purple cabbage: 6 heads of cabbage

  • broccoli: with 6 broccoli plants, grew maybe 1/4 of what we ate in broccoli this year. The broccoli didn’t produce as well as last year I think because of the heat.

  • acorn squash: 2 good sized ones. Squash vine borer did this plant in early

  • butternut squash - 8 butternut squash.

  • 4 yellow zucchini - these kinda got destroyed by pests in the summer (squash vine borer)

  • eggplant: 8 eggplant out of 2 plants. Not fantastic, but better than last year

  • tomatoes: lost count. 4 tomatoes plants produced more tomatoes than we needed by far. We probably gave away 75-80%.

  • Bush beans: filled about 3 - 4 1 gallon containers of beans. We gave half away.

  • produced all of the thyme, oregano, basil, and rosemary we needed.

  • 2 pumpkin plants popped up without us planting them (probably a critter carried seeds from the previous year or something). We didn’t take care of them at all, and they still gave us a couple pumpkins.
