Hello again, folks! I was originally hacking away on a completely different script, when I saw the "Script Writer Appreciation Month" event going on. I had an old idea stewing in the back room for a few months, and I decided to bring it to the front of the line as a recognition of this fancy community event. So I hammered this out in all of three weeks, which was a minor miracle on my part, trust me.
But some of the core bits of this script are way older than that. I'm pretty sure I was 12-14 when I saw that History Channel show talking about the history of absinthe, and my brain somehow spun the "Green Fairy" into some kind of living hallucination, real but unreal, only visible by those who drank enough absinthe. Sadly, reality is less awesome than my imagination, but the idea endured, until now.
As for the issues the listener confronts, I decided to just borrow from how I usually feel when I write scripts for this place. If you feel the same way as you write, hopefully these words will give you some advice. Then, send me that advice, because I still feel this way even now.
Reference picture: La Muse verte (trans. The Green Muse), by Albert Maignan. Best pic I could find.
Synopsis: You (the one making the audio) are the Green Fairy, the symbol of absinthe use and artistic inspiration. (As to what you really are, it's ambiguous, see the General Notes) Lately, you've been favoring a promising writer (the listener) with your inspiration, but he has started experiencing a severe case of writer's block that has ruined his self-confidence. Seeking inspiration, he's drunk enough absinthe to actually see and interact with you. You realize he may get himself killed before he reaches the potential you have given him, and decide to intervene. You talk some sense into him, help confront his issues, and things escalate a bit further...
A quote or two:
And the *state* of your apartment! A farmer would laugh to see such a fine sty with no pigs to wallow in it! I can't even call it a rat nest, because the rats moved out weeks ago in protest! I knew a one-eared Dutchman in an asylum who kept a cleaner room than you! While painting in oils, no less!
--
Believe me that I have a... knack for seeing these sort of things. You can emerge from this malaise a stronger man than when you entered it. (more sincere, and with gravity) You have a great work still in you. Maybe several. The kind of work that will have people toasting your genius, and make future generations of artists utter your name with *reverence*. It would be a *tragedy* if those works never came forth because you drank yourself to death.
--
I'm as serious as the grave! They're impressionable young women, seeking to rebel. You're a writer and a poet, and rather a Bohemian at that! Cupid himself couldn't grant you an easier opportunity! And the face you make as I grasp your manhood! (approving moan) Only a woman with a heart of iron could deny such a cute face in the throes of passion!
General Notes: My inspiration for this one was all over the place. This Green Fairy is sort of a three-way straddle between actual depictions of the Green Fairy, the Leanan Sidhe of Irish mythology, and some SCP-esque ideas of a living, sentient hallucination I first thought of when I watched a History Channel show about the history of absinthe. Your voice should be dreamlike and ethereal, as if the listener still can't be sure whether or not you're truly real. Don't be afraid to add an undercurrent of danger in places; the Leanan Sidhe's gifts usually came at the cost of eventual madness and a young death. Lastly, the first surge in popularity for absinthe was during the 1890's, so any references to other artists should be planned accordingly. The vocabulary used is also a touch more refined, as befits the time period. If English isn't your first language, you may have to look some things up, and that's perfectly fine.
DISCLAIMER: This script is the property of u/MrZanzibarMcGee, do not claim otherwise. All human characters portrayed are 18 , and all non-human characters are of the age of maturity for their species. You are free to fill this script for fair use on any freely available website; use on for-money websites (Patreon, etc) requires my express permission. You are allowed to make adjustments to the script as you fill it, so long as "the soul" of the work remains intact. Also, substance abuse is bad, and this script should not be taken as an endorsement of it. If this script hits too close to home, seek help with whatever resources are available in your country/region.
BONUS DISCLAIMER: I did a fair bit of research to try and make this semi-accurate, unless it got in the way of the story. For example, current science says that absinthe, even with the wormwood and thujone, is no more psychoactive than regular alcohol. And the Poe Society of Baltimore has their own research saying that the common story of Edgar Allan Poe's death may be more a case of character assassination than actual events. I haven't the energy nor scholarly background to argue to the contrary. I'll leave the other notes for those who can find the appropriate references.
Lastly, a heaping pile of gratitude for u/YourMomWearsSocks, u/ironwrappedinvelvet, and u/singmypraise for beta-ing my drafts and giving their honest opinions.
