Theyâre talking. Can you hear them?
I hear their voices as whispers some of the time. Now, in the quiet after this battle, I can hear them better than ever.
You canât hear them?
Theyâre the people playing us in their game.
[sigh] I know you donât believe me when I talk about that. You think I am crazy, even though Iâm a paladin. But my class and my elven heritage gives me a special connection to the higher realms. Even the place where our players live.
Theyâre talking to another. Not another player. A higher order being, who actually guides this world as our players guide us. Theyâre trying to figure a way out of this mess they got us into.
It wasnât just your fault you forgot to check the room for traps. You are smarter than that. Literally, your intelligence score is extremely high based on what I overhear them say. But your player got lazy and didnât remember to check, so now the two of us are locked in this room, with no way to escape.
Wait, I do have the blessing of the woods, which I can invoke to bring myself back to my home once a month. I could teleport there, even from within this trap, and then I could immediately ride back to-
[sigh] No, theyâve done the math. We were low on rations to begin with. My home among the branches of the trees is too far away. Iâd never make it back before you starved to death.
Wait. Theyâre consulting a tome they call the âplayerâs handbookâ.
Maybe they will find some spell in that book, although I get the impression they are not magical beings, despite how they guide our actions. They are both incredibly powerful, and yet so extraordinarily weak. They are desperate though, so perhaps they will yet prevail and-
One moment. Theyâve found something.
Something about my special ability to always summon my mount to me, regardless of distance or obstacle. Except Iâve never chosen my mount yet. And I fail to see how summoning a horse or unicorn or other animal helps us now.
Um, okay. The players are consulting with the other.
They want to know if I can declare you as my mount. The tome defines a mount as any rideable creature, and technically a human is rideable. ..
Thereâs a certain insane logic to it. I teleport out. Then I summon you to me.
But there must be a catch. There is always a catch where these others are concerned...
This story evolved a bit as it was being written, almost as if it had a life of it's own. The ending changed or expanded multiple times literally as I was writing it. Hopefully this still works as an idea because it's something a bit out there as an idea. Also, I hate the title, but I needed to attach something to it. I really didn't want to go with "Elven Paladin Mounts Her Human Rogue Friend to Save His Life" or something like that, because that feels a little on the pure porn side. Although maybe that still works as a title. Or I could have gone with something vague like "Fighting Her Fate". Hopefully some of you can come up with better titles, or will let me know if you think this idea works. Don't forget that you have a say in every story out there, through your comments. Your desires do make a difference.
All characters are legal adults, although not necessarily human ones. By all means, please feel free to make any changes to this if someone wants to record it. This is largely a one pass brain dump of a story and could use some cleaning up.
Also, please forgive the clumsy poetry in here, meant to represent the use of magic. That's another idea I threw into here at I was writing this. As I said, this story just kind of happened on its own, and I was there to write it down as it did so.
