[sigh] Sorry. I have a lot of deep feelings about what happened to Pluto, as did my father. He took it personally. You just don’t take away a planet from someone. From an entire world of fans. I understand the reasons you did, but there were so many reasons to keep it around too. You could have kept it for historical reasons, because there’s an argument for that. Or kept it as a real planet, and promoted other similar objects to planetary status. Like Ceres, or even the moon as some suggested.
And then there was the probe sent to Pluto. It was launched before the vote, meant to explore the ninth planet of the solar system, but instead ended up visiting just another dwarf planet.
Except there was nothing routine about it. I know you had to have watched the news on that with as much interest as my father and I did. You couldn’t have helped to be moved by what you saw.
Maybe you even started to regret your vote.
But not enough to change it completely. At least that’s what my research has shown. You’re older now, just like I am. You’re not just another junior scientist. You’re a very much respected member of the astronomical science community, with a lot of power to influence how other members will vote.
And rumor has it… another vote on Pluto is coming up. Well, on planets in general.
This is your big chance. You can right the wrong of many years ago.
And it’s my chance too. My father isn’t doing so well. He needs to see Pluto restored to its former place of honor with the other major planets. I don’t think it will be enough to turn things around for him. But it will give him some comfort in the time he has left.
I was prepared to gather up all of my own research and present it to you here, tonight. But you’ve seen it all already. And you’ve heard my argument about making Pluto a major planet again.
But you haven’t seen my own heavenly body. At least until I open up this trench coat, and let it fall to the floor.
The excerpt above is from a good way into the script, because it takes a while for things to develop. So, if you do click the link, it will take a minute or two of reading before you catch up to it.
I debated over the [rape] tag on this. I don't want to overuse it, and thus make it less effective as a warning, or to keep people away from what's actually pretty innocent stuff. But I don't think the enthusiasm is initially there for the woman in this story, despite this being part of her plan. There's also mention of rape in tying things to the story of Pluto/Hades and Persephone. So better to err on the side of caution, I guess.
