It's not yet the 4th, but my neighbors are already setting off fireworks. I was thinking, and came up with this.
Your lover was in the army, and returned suffering from PTSD. One such trigger is loud noises – fireworks, specifically. Your asshole neighbors start setting them off in the middle of the night, waking her and triggering her.
I'd love to see you trying to keep her grounded, and distracted, comforting her in whatever way you choose.
