Ruling on a ball pickup

So this happened last weekAfter reading the ball theft question I though I would ask for opinions. Hit a nice drive my normal 240-250ish. Walking towards my ball I see a cart rip over from the next fairway. Guy grabs my ball to look at it. I yell at him it’s mine so he just tosses it a few yards away from where it landed and carries on.

I go up and my ball is in a fucking crater of a divot. My wife told me to foot wedge it out. I did but stopped keeping score for the round.

So do you take the foot wedge or play it as it lies?
