I Calculated The Handicaps of 18 Golf Youtubers to Find Out Who Would Win
Post Body

See the title.

Golf Youtube has exploded in popularity since the beginning of the pandemic, and occasionally I see friendly or heated arguments online about which of the people churning out golf content is actually the best/who would win/what their handicaps are. To settle these arguments once and for all, or at least add another round to the chamber for those who like to engage in them, I set myself the task of taking every golfer I could think of who plays on youtube's rounds and figuring out a rough estimate of their handicap.

Requirements: Basically to get on this list, I or a couple people I talked to had to be relatively familiar with your videos. You also had to have some videos where you played either 9 hole or 18 hole stroke play rounds. A couple people I wanted to add (such as Alex Horne and John Robins from Bad Golf) just never play stroke play (on camera). Others only do instructional videos, so there were no rounds to use for the calculation (meandmygolf guys). I would be happy to add more people to the list if you have suggestions, just add them to the comments below.

Methodology: To calculate this rough handicap estimate, I took the last 3 rounds for each player that I could find and used the slope and handicap ratings for the tees that they played to find the average of their handicap. My priority was to find full 18 hole rounds, but if I couldn't find 3, I would extrapolate a 9 hole round. Now, since when you are calculating your official handicap, you are supposed to use the best 10 of your last 20 rounds, the numbers I've calculated should be considered to be an extremely rough estimate. Please do not shoot the messenger here, it was a lot of work and I did the best I could. Feel free to argue that "so-and-so has cured their slice so they have to be 4 strokes better now" if you like, just know that in my playing experience, almost no change to your game, no matter how drastic, leads to that much of a change overnight.

I'm also aware that some of these people (like Rick Shiels) actually calculated their handicap using more data in videos at one point, so whatever number they came up with is probably closer to correct (more data is good). THIS RANKING IS A ROUGH ESTIMATE. If you see your name here feel free to jump into the comments with what your actual handicap is.

So without further ado, here are the rankings:

PLAYER YOUTUBE CHANNEL ESTIMATED HANDICAP
Will Miles* Bryan Bros Golf -4.7
Wesley Bryan (PGA Tour Pro) Bryan Bros Golf -3.9
George Bryan Bryan Bros Golf -2.7
Zac Radford Zac Radford -2
Peter Finch Peter Finch Golf -1.6

Grant Horvat Good Good/Grand Horvat Golf -0.5
Micah Morris Good Good/Micah Morris 0.1
Kyle Berkshire Kyle Berkshire 0.2
Rick Shiels Rick Shiels Golf 0.3
Matt Fryer Matt Fryer Golf 0.3
Matt Scharf Good Good/Matt Scharf 0.7

Brice Butler** Brice Butler 6.7
Stephen Castaneda** Good Good/Stephen Castaneda 7.6
Not a Scratch Golfer Not a Scratch Golfer 8.4
Erik Anders Lang Random Golf Club Films 11.6

*One of Will Miles's rounds includes a 63 which I think was one of the best of his life so if anybody's is a little higher than it might otherwise be it will be his. He is very good, though and wholeheartedly deserves to be highly ranked.

**I could only find 1 set of 9 hole stroke play for both of these guys.

Enjoy and please don't be too hard on me if you think I really screwed this up or if you hate Golf Youtube and content related to it. Let me know if there's anyone you think I should add!
