Exactly a year ago around this time I went to apply for an internship near my university. While they said they liked me, they did explain that I was still too fresh and would call me back later on (which they did in October). Fast forward to November they hired me and HR said I would be working around 20 hours a week. I am currently in school (which is all online) and it hasn’t put on any stress in terms of time management - I just can’t do online school.
The problem is the engineer has realized I am still too fresh in my GIS skills. Although I have become somewhat more familiar with using basic skills in GIS (such as inputing data and understanding how to edit it to make it more accurate as well as using the editor tool he showed me) I haven’t really been working more than 10 hours a week and seem to be given the same exact work.
I know being a technician isn’t super difficult work and that’s probably what I’m going to be after I graduate but am I not learning enough or is this basically all I can be taught?
There are both pros and cons to this job and my “boss”
Pros: - I can pick when I want to work - I can use ArcMap for my GIS classes instead of on my Mac VPN which is terrible - It’s paid - I work for a municipality and the internship is around 6 months which I feel would look good on my resume
Cons: - Its a 50 minute drive there and back (so is my university so this isn’t that bad) - There isn’t much being introduced - He seems to get somewhat upset when I did not understand something in the beginning - While working his own job he has to create work for me (which I’m sure is somewhat annoying) and that’s why there is limited work available
I don’t want to complain, I’m just curious if I should just stick it out until April?
I might get another internship in the summer to have additional experience and another view
