It explains how the second movie is entirely ignored in Afterlife, and also why Egon is such a bitchy dickweed in GB2. And also why it’s just generally a loosely plotted, poorly written, plot-hole laden mess to begin with.

It further justifies his decision to abandon his kid (“But, we saved the world again!) and also why everyone in 1989 has suddenly forgotten a 9/11 scale attack by ghosts and a giant marshmallow guy five years prior, treating all the guys like quacks, even putting them on trial. That’s Egon’s projection of how irl, the real life Ray et al have now rejected him.

In his delusional guilt fantasy, he does nothing less than bring the statue of liberty to life with slime guns he invented for absolutely no reason, and march her triumphantly through Manhattan.

And Vigo is his archetype for both a truly evil man, and a baby seeking a parent. Mad Freud shit going on here.

The idea that Janine rejected him for Louis, rather than because fell apart at the seams after defeating Gozer and putting him and his friends out of business, also explains a ton.
