Rewatching the 1984 film ahead of Frozen Empire

I'm planning to rewatch the three films in the main continuity ahead of the release of the fourth. It is also the 40th anniversary...

So, I've just watched Ghostbusters (currently on Prime Video here, but about to go off it) and here are some of my thoughts:

  • It's a pretty quick moving film and a short one as well.
  • There's a lot of smoking in this movie. Modern stuff set in the 1980s - such as Stranger Things - rather dials down the tobacco consumption.
  • Venkman's behaviour towards his younger students would not get anything like the same tolerance today as it did in 1984.
  • Also, Stantz getting ghost oral sex would probably not be something you'd have today.
  • It says something about the treatment of POCs in the industry at the time that Ernie Hudson is only credit eighth - below. He is also absent from the contemporary posters.
  • This movie cost nearly $90m to make at today's prices. That's not a cheap movie and the money is clearly on the screen with the big crowd scenes in particular.
  • Adjusting for inflation, this movie made close to $900m. That's Guardians of the Galaxy type money. It's an even bigger achievement when you remember in 1984 there wasn't a China market, about half of Europe was closed off to Western movies except via VHS bootlegs and Africa didn't have anything like the money or population it does now to spend on entertainment.
  • I hadn't realised that a few of the musical cues in this movie are used in Spirits Unleashed.
  • I also found myself wondering what the property damage score would be in that hotel ballroom.
  • Comparing the neighbourhood to a demilitarised zone - oh, how NYC has changed.
  • I'd forgotten Rick Moranis was in it. He's still alive, but he largely retired from live-action acting in 1997. He is due to come back for Shrunk.
  • Janine is not a customer service person, is she?

The movie definitely holds up pretty well, I would say. What do other people think?
