As the title states, I just rewatched Arriety and I have such conflicting opinions. I saw it as a kid in theaters, and it blew me away. I loved every second of it. It was the film that got me into Ghibli. However, I rewatched the film not too long ago in its original Japanese form, and it was still good, albeit worse than I remembered. I just finished watching the American Disney Dub and wow is it bad. I'm surprised I don't hear more people talking about this. Not only does the dialogue sound way worse, but they remove the ambiguity from the end and cut off Arriety's Song to showcase a generic Bridgit Mendler song, which doesn't match the tone of the film whatsoever.
I did want to call some appreciation to this film however, because I constantly see this among People's least favorite Ghibli films, and while it's far from their best, I wanna highlight the good. The Animation is obviously going to be beautiful in every Ghibli film but I think this might be one of their best looking films. The way nature is filmed in all these movies is wonderful, but being at such a small viewpoint really highlights the beauty. Only Ghibli could make an ordinary house and Ordinary Garden look magical and breathtaking, but of course, it all looks wonderful. I especially love the design of Arriety's House, which has so much detail put into it, it just feels so cozy. Not only that, but the music in Arriety might be my favorite of all of Ghibli. Arriety's Song is both Beautiful and Epic, and the actual score is beautiful and fits the film perfectly. Those are just my two cents though. What did you guys think of Arriety? And what are your opinions regarding the language difference?
