And it's not very bad as most have made it to be with how they're disgusted by it?
Okay, so if Studio Ghibli has set the bar so high with its previous efforts, then Earwig certainly has not meet those standards. I think the choice of using 3D has taken a lot from the usual excellence in character animation that Ghibli is known for and, as one reviewer has put it, resulted into plasticky characters with children looking like they had Botox. I think that's the biggest problem, as the characters looked fake, faker than even flat 2D drawings. I also felt that the facial expressions were not really very nuanced.
I also thought that background animation felt flatter than what we usually get from Ghibli, which has even the smallest details seemingly alive and thoughtfully made. I don't know though if this was intentional, but I thought the look is unique from other studios, including US ones.
Other than those concerns above, I could say that I was genuinely entertained? The music literally rocks. The latter part of the story did seem rushed but I low-key hope there's a part 2 to continue the tale.
Idk but maybe if it was not released by Ghibli it wouldn't have invited such justified scorn although of course the reviews would've panned it nonetheless. Justified because again, the studio has set the bar quite high before. But there it is now and it's part of the catalog. And it can be entertaining if you allow it to I guess.
