Some people go through suffering in their life and they come out stronger, they develop ways to beat their adversity, or at least ways to cope with it and it makes them more well rounded, wiser people. Others will end up being depressed and suicidal, or having anxiety issues or low self esteem that will cripple them for the rest of their lives. I'd this a genetic thing or is it to do with how you learn to cope with things? Can you learn to react one way or the other? Or does it depend on what type of suffering you go through?
I tend to find that the more misery I go through the more I appreciate smaller good things when they happen and it actually makes me a happier person overall, in a weird way. It lowers the joy threshold in my brain and it takes a lot less to please me than maybe some other people. I also find that I learn a lot about myself and the world through this suffering and it makes me a better person. I'm just curious why people react in different ways to things.
