TLDR: What thing or activity can I pair with reading (before, during, or after) in order to associate reading books with a pleasurable or satisfying feeling?
I grew up being forced to read books in school, and I hated it. I hated it so much that I never read a single book for school assignments, always SparkNotes. The first time I ever read a book cover to cover was at age 19, in college, when it dawned on me that you can read whatever you want.
As a result, I have a rather limited background with book reading, and I don't find it inherently enjoyable. What I do find enjoyable is the knowledge gained from reading, as well as the increase in verbal acuity that I feel when I read regularly. My favorite books have always been non-fiction.
However, since I don't enjoy the physical act of reading I've never been able to build the habit of it, even if I try to only read books that interest me. I have always relied on short-term motivation, which quickly fades with the constant temptation of more passive forms of entertainment, like YouTube.
I'm a big fan of Clear's Atomic Habits, and have been trying to approach building a reading habit using his 'four pillars': 1) make it obvious, 2) make it easy, 3) make it attractive, 4) make it satisfying.
I've done pretty well with 1-3 I think, and haven't had much success in sticking with reading. So, I'm asking if anyone has any suggestions for how to make reading satisfying?
My first temptation is to reward myself with junk food, or watching YouTube if I read a certain number of pages, however these rewards contradict my other goals of being healthy and spending less time on YouTube.
I also welcome any ideas or suggestions for any of the 1-4 laws, since perhaps people will find this post later after having the same problem as me, and would find it useful.
