Atrophy of the hind legs?

Post Body

I posted recently about how my girl scared me by wobbling. It has not happened again since but it served as a warning and I have been more considerate since. I have also become more serious with gentle strength training to try to slow down the natural weakening of a dog's hind legs as they age.

However, there was at least one comment that pointed out that the atrophy was visible and that also had me worried so I've tried to compare with older pictures and it's hard for me to see. I'm not sure if she really is getting thinner at an alarming rate or if she always was rather thin. So, asking for help is someone has the spare time to take a look.

First picture: 2 years. Second picture: 3 years. Third picture: 4 years. Picture 4, 5 and 6: 6 years. Picture 7: 7 years. And the last four pictures are recent at 9 years.

What do you think? Is she visibly losing muscles so much that it's obvious in pictures or is she just a thin dog, making you assume that she lost muscle because you know she's older?

I'll of course train her the same either way, as well as respect that she is older and hold her back a little more even though she's still high energy.

Thank you!

She does not look like that at all.

And I'm sorry your dog has to deal with that. :(

No, she does not but I'll keep an eye out for that. Thank you!

I'm so sorry that happened to you and your boy. :(

I made a post about it earlier, but was calmed in the comments. She was probably just tired from playing a lot of tug on a long walk, after not playing much tug during the winter. She wobbled twice just as she came up the stairs and into the apartment, and hasn't since.

But she might still be losing some strength in her hind legs, as is apparently common in older dogs, even if it's not DM. The vet says she's a little thin and her hips a little stiff, though nothing alarming. But she has always been rather thin so I don't know how much of it is age related change.

And no, 9 is not very old and she's still very energetic and does frequently get mistaken for a puppy still.

Yes, she doesn't even let me fold the foot over.

What do you mean by hop on the back legs?

Swinging inward?

I looked at some recent videos of her walking and running (I'm not with her right now) and I don't think so but I'm not not sure what you mean. Also, if they did, what would that mean?
