Lake Kivu is a well-known lake with high levels of carbon dioxide and other gases at the northern end emanating from the adjacent volcanic activity of the Virunga mountains. At the lake bottom there is evidence of sealed volcanic tubes from previous activity. Question: If these chutes were to reopen or new ones form, what will be the reaction when the molten lava meets the gas rich waters? There are some descriptions from the 1930s of short-term localised muddy chaotic activity that may be relevant but not scientific
