Magnets and (maybe) meteorites
Post Body

There was an interesting piece in Science a few days ago that might be relevant for folks in this sub given the prevalence of the "I found this rock, it might be a meteorite, what do I do?," posts here. While most of the time these "meteorites" are something less interesting (random basalt, slag, etc), as described in the linked piece, grabbing a hand magnet, or telling posters to grab a hand magnet, to see if it's magnetic might not be the best advice, because on the (albeit slim) chance that it is a meteorite, close proximity to a hand magnet can be enough to destroy remnant magnetic information in these samples.
