Why do deserts form?

I have been trying to understand the processes that form deserts. And maybe my question is actually why don’t they form. Looking at the world map, huge desert in Africa, keep going east, roughly same latitude desert in Arabian peninsula, keep going east some arid land in same latitude in some of mainland asia, but then china and those southern asian countries in same latitude are very green. Why?
