Are there any practical uses to a vertical world map?

I read somewhere that “vertical” maps such as these might be more common in the future since they would be better for depicting trade routes from Russia and China across and iceless Artic ocean, since these countries would benefit greatly from such a scenario. But of course there are many ways to make a vertical map depending on how you center it, so what do you guys think about this alien depiction of our planet?
