But Lake Kivu could take everyone living around her with her.
There's a massive amount of CO2, methane, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) trapped by poor circulation and pressure at the bottom of the lake. Kivu is one of the African Rift Zone lakes so the CO2 and H2S is from the degassing of volcanic conduits, and methane from a mix of decomposing organics and water-magma interaction.
They have a pump that's slowly extracting the methane for energy, but it's very slow. If there's an earthquake, landslide, or eruption the gas could be catastrophically released and suffocate the surrounding communities. H2S can kill you in one breath at just 0.1% concentration.
