Do you prefer trans or trans* as an umbrella term? Or anything else?

Recently had a discussion with someone about this and while I don't like the term trans*, I try to use over trans when talking about binary and non-binary trans people as it as my impression is most non-binary people prefer it, even if I don't. However, am I wrong in thinking this? Let me know!
