Secure and Private messengers are an absolute minefield, with so many options to choose from, which one is right for you, and suits your needs well enough?
Of the 3 messengers we recommend, Session is a relatively new one, but has some killer features that the others don't, so why is this one on our list, and why is it rising so rapidly up the ranks?
Session is leading the charge when it comes to "Decentralising" your data, meaning none of your information needed to chat with others is ever passed through one single server. Everyone that uses Session acts as a node on their network, meaning your messages pass through multiple, highly-randomised points before reaching the recipient, all in the blink of an eye.
- You are a token - No sign-ups, no mobile numbers or email addresses required. You open the app and are assigned a randomly-generated string of words which become your secret key. You share your Session ID with others so they can contact you, simple! When you're done with that account, just logout and forget the Session ID, and you're done, you can make a brand new one immediately.
- Granular Privacy Focus - By operating with nodes and tokens, Session allows you to have fine-tuned controls over who can contact you at any given time, unlike other social media apps which require you to follow lengthy, privacy-invasive sign-up processes, Session is a simple, disposable way to communicate.
- Unsend, Auto-Delete and all the goodies are available here, so all of the features you know and love from other platforms are available right here in session. Delete a message without a trace, destroy your whole account whenever you want, and more!
Session is available on Android, iOS, Windows and MacOS - You can check them out at getsession.org to find out more and get their official download links. If you're using privacy-preserving operating systems like GrapheneOS or Calyx, you can also download the APK files for manual install on those platforms.
Let us know what you think of session below and if you'd like us to keep putting out suggestions for you to remain anonymous online, we know sometimes you just need to dip, we totally understand ;)
