My first contact with gay art was in public toilets. Followed by gay bars, dark rooms and cruising parks. I wonder if there's a book archiving such art.
I have the photo of a mural from an SF gay bar that is long gone, some I photographed myself in some bars or trees in cruising places. I did loose many that I stored on cds. Such a way of storing info...
There was a leather bar in Amsterdam, the Argos. The first of the sort there, closed years ago by the city. I lost those photos as well, and I was granted access by the owner to document the space before he sold it to the city. I hoped it would have been turned into a gay museum, as that place had stories to tell, saw faces that are no longer with us. Such a shame, Amsterdam!
Another example is IT, a disco that died after the death of its owner, and because it was so gay, the city bought the space and threw it under the rug. Such stories are numerous throughout the free world and our history is defaced like the talibans defaced art. Going back to the question, please tell me/us if there's a collection of "primitive" gay art somewhere. Thanks
