Holding hands in public?

So I recently met a guy I’m into…and we held hands when we were hanging out for the first time, we were walking into a store, and I was so happy holding his hand but then people started staring at us and a group of like 3 guys started laughing when we walked by… I know it’s probably gonna happen regardless of where you go, but any tips for dealing with this type of bullshit? I’m not ashamed of being gay, but I’m really just scared that someone would try to beat us up…
