Can I collect seeds now to grow next year?

I am planning on starting a vegetable garden next year but I've been doing lots of planning now. I keep coming across seeds I would love to get now but I've heard the germination rate can slow over time. Would there be a large decrease in germination between now and next spring or would I be OK to purchase the seeds now?
