New homeowner, gardening novice, I don’t know where to start?

We recently bought a house from an older couple, and our neighbors keep telling me how beautiful the gardens used to be when they could maintain them. It feels like a lot of pressure!
I’d love for the garden to look great year-round, hold some shape in the winter (we are hardiness zone 6B) and be fairly low-maintenance (Re: I don’t see myself planting annuals).
We’ve got some bald patches, and a funny looking mailbox area right now.
