I've first known Gantz several years ago when a friend of mine kept on stating that this one is a "masterpiece of its own right" in which I immediately searched and read but was turned off due to it almost being a doujin disguised as a mainstream manga. So fast forward a couple of years I decided to give it a go again after watching a fast overview of Gantz:0 and.. well.
First of all, the plot is really unique and gives off a sense of mysteriousness and thrill throughout every chapter (until that alien invasion arc begun lmao) its like.. y'know the feeling of helplessness and knowing that you're all being toyed with?
Though moving onto the MC -- I'll admit, it made me almost drop this several times and the thing that kept me from dropping it is the seductive n*de posters (like why?) and the premise of the MC getting that sweet juicy character development. BUT! This is where IMO one of the pillars that held gantz in general. I resonated with the MC (except that I have adults to look up to and not treating women as objects to satisfy my raging hormones) and I knew that I would do much worse than him If it were to be me a few years ago. I started enjoying reading this when he got the development he really needed and went full chad mode on them.. when he learned how to take responsibilities, view people as equals and what not but.. that all came to an end when he still selfishly chose tae after the vampires appeared thingy.
Its truly understandable why he would go to such lengths but to be selfish enough to get her in danger? Now before any of you accuse me of being mad because the MC didn't end up with reika (#bestgirlbtw) I am. Disappointed too. Not only is she the perfect candidate but she's someone who knows what's happening and can defend herself as well when need be! I just don't like the MC forcing himself over the innocent girl of the unknown dangers that would come up. (And yes, he might've have felt home whenever he was with tae and the first to care for him BUT STILL).
Last arc was.. well.. disappointing to say the least. If it was properly 'executed' then all's good and not to mention the ending.. Its like Fort of Apocalpyse ending y'know ? It felt rushed for me as I feel it shouldn't have ended there still.
Lastly, leaving loose ends. What happened to the dog? Panda? The poor lady who got G-r*p? (Yeah, I won't accept them just dying off camera especially without a comment on them -- Like the dog survived for months with the um.. the middle schooler and not a comment from anyone?) And I don't really want to say this but the representation of the western nations especially the Americans were outright absurd lol. Looks like there are still plenty of peeps from Japan who resents America for occupying their nation (This is a stretch I know).
Anyways, the artist really knows how to draw seductive characters and oh boi with the introduction of reika, it immediately had me searching for doujins but was thoroughly disappointed to find literally only a few exists and it depicts reika being trashed upon like how I was with the ending. For me, leaving loose ends immediately deranks it from being a masterpiece so.. yeah.
It got long lmao. If you've read this far then thanks for coming to my unannounced half-baked ted talk. TL;DR: I'm Disappointed. In my opinion not worth calling a masterpiece alongside berserk.
