Hello! As stated in the title, I'm looking for games that have some sort of truly unique mechanic or gameplay. Some of the games that come to mind:
Portal -- The portal mechanic was something that I had never seen in a game before, and I found it so innovative and inspiring.
Middle-Earth: Shadow games -- Being able to mind control and recruit AI minions to fight along beside you, especially in a stealth action game, hit just right, in a way I'm not sure I've seen before or since.
Slay the Spire -- I was late to the whole Roguelike Deckbuilder Card Battler genre, and I'm aware they are a dime a dozen now, but the feeling of when I first played this game was so fresh.
Minecraft -- Clones! Clones everywhere! But when I first played Minecraft there was very little like it at time, and nothing I had ever personally seen or played.
Toribash -- I can't think of a more unique fighting experience. Truly one of a kind as far as I'm aware.
Fez and Braid - both were pretty unique when I played them as well.
Tons of simulators -- Not really my cup of tea, but I acknowledge some of the unique mechanics.
I guess what I'm really looking for is a game to inspire that feeling that makes me say "This is new!" or "I've never seen that before!"
Some sort of gameplay or mechanic implementation that if done before, is in a league of its own, like destruction in Teardown depth in Dwarf Fortress, or the freedom in Kenshi (so I've heard; I've not played any of these).
Plenty of games, like Disco Elysium and Undertale for instance, are definitely uncommon and interesting, but they don't really have a unique mechanic that I haven't seen in plenty of other games.
I imagine if there's something that never made it on my radar it has to be one of the lesser known indies or pretty niche.
Any suggestions for any platform would be greatly appreciated!
