I'm looking for a first person singleplayer space combat game like Freespace 2, with cockpit view if possible. Its taking me too much time of searchs because every modern game I see has stuff mixed to it like X series (you have to build an empire and do quests..) or is "with roguelike elements == permadeath (everspace)".
I just want to deploy from a carrier and shoot spaceships with my weapons, maybe with some complexity like fights against big ships shooting at its weakpoints and that kind of stuff, equip your ship with different guns or different ships to play with...
I was looking at House of the Dying Sun, but it isn't clear if that game has enough variety in weapons, ships or missions (does it have at least escort missions? I like those). For now it's the best candidate but maybe there's some other hidden gem, or totally mainstream one I don't know of.
One main requirement that is not that hard to meet nowadays is that it has to be playable with kboard and mouse. I have a HOTAS but it's not always available and it's also pretty cheap/poorly made, so it doesn't come with most features.
Games I've looked at:
FreeSpace (I have played countless mods for FSO 2, I love it)
Tachyon The Fringe: They say it's buggy and really outdated
X-Wing/TIE fighter series: I played them with a HOTAS and had tons of fun.
X series: I absolutely love them, but I want to play combat focused game now.
Absolute territory: I was amazed by it when I first saw it, it looked perfect. I have tried and I refunded because it felt outdated/not fully developed
Void Destroyer 2: I love it, but it's like X series, space Elon Musk instead of space soldier.
Descent (not FreeSpace, the old ones): I already played and I like them, but they are too outdated compared to the new ones.
Evochron Legacy and mercenary: They add too much side stuff and feel too underdeveloped for my taste.
Archimedean Dinasty/Aquanox: I have Thalassophobia and submechanophobia, please don't suggest me games with this theme.
I hope you know a good game that can scratch my itch. I am OK with old games if they have standard nowadays control scheme or can be modified to work with nowadays controls and have enough variety.
Thanks!
Note I am going to sleep as I have to work tomorrow but I'll answer the comments at a break time when working
