Discussion on the state of shield management in video games

So I am honestly looking around at many space games right now, and one thing I always kind of loved is shield management. There has always been one game in particular that I use to admire and love to an extent which was Star Trek Online's shield management or Star Sector.

I loved the concept as a kid and I even love it now! The idea shields are not omni-directional or moving around independent of the ship, but rather, mutli-directional, yet say I can say shunt shield energy from all directions to the direction the enemy is general at, or say spread it evenly across all of them.

Then there are a ton of just general boosts you got to increase and play around with them. As a kid, I can not express how MUCH I loved it. Yet it feels like space games do not seem to concerned with shield management for some reason and to me it feels like if a medieval game had focused purely on say how to strike an opponent, yet not how to block a strike.

I feel like shield management is one of those things that could be used in extremely amazing ways! It could be more complex than say 4 directions and you have to determine if you shunt power to make sure you experience less damage now, but do less dmg, or more power to weapons, and have to chose say less shields on one part of the ship!

THAT WOULD BE AMAZING! You could have a risk reward, where you turn off shields on a certain direction and it gives a massive boost to another subsystem or to the other directional shields.

Know I know that is overly complex, but say let your player be able to make configurations before a fight or something! Hell make it all optional and make it so the players can bypass the system if that's not their cup of tea by doing a tradeoff system such as stealth, speed, raw dps, or a combination of all of those.

To me it is kind of like being able to parry in a sword game. I see combat like a dance, and giving us the ability to have more options could honestly open the doors to a whole new side. It could open the door to so many interesting things if well implemented!

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Any games you think honestly implemented it in extremely creative ways, or that would do well with trying it out? Am I just some insane lunatic on a soap box screaming like an angry gamer (actually do not answer that please)?
