How to use a controller?

This might be a general question to all games, but I'm planning on getting a console to play with a few friends. I play on PC, but if I connect a controller I can't play. I don't know how to use controllers in general, and I can't find any vids on how to use controllers in general. Any help counts.
Edit: I should probably elaborate, not how to connect the controller to a PC. How do I aim and shoot and move without everything feeling awkward. Coming from a keyboard and mouse player.
