Why Trevor, from Metal Slug 4, wasn't brought back for other games?

These days I've been feeling a strong nostalgia and while playing Metal Slug 4 I noticed that Trevor wasn't brought back for any other MS game.
Was he hated by the players?
Is there any official statement about this? 'cause I haven't found anything about it so far.
