As the title sort of implies, Iāve played the Insomniac Spider-Man games for years now, and now that the initial hype of it all is over and done, and Iāve had time to play the game and get used to it. I canāt help but wonder if they maybe shouldāve taken some more inspiration from other Spider-Man games like Web of Shadows for things like Web Swinging and especially combat.
When it comes to Web swinging, I think itās pretty well known now that while the web swinging in the Insomniac games are easy to figure out and understand, basically having a low skill floor, it begins to feel like handholding and restricting after a while as a lot of control is sort of taken away from the player and sort of just automated, merely requiring the player to point the left stick and press āXā to leap off the web. It essentially has a lower skill ceiling compared to other games like Web of Shadows as some critics are beginning to point out. It lacks a sort of fluidity especially when you try to incorporate things like short periods where you run on the roof of buildings as you end up losing all momentum upon landing.
Then thereās the combat which frankly, is too easy. Itās gotten to a point for me where if I wanted to, I could end crimes simply by combining certain gadgets and abilities like one or two web bombs followed by a concussive blast, or a venom strike followed by a gravity well then some web shots to cause a chain web down or I can use a mega venom blast and just blow everyone up. I can essentially end a crime in seconds purely using gadgets and abilities which makes them trivial. I also just donāt like how āgroundedā Spider-Man is in the games when it comes to combat. It just feels like heās imitating Batman when heās Spider-Man is the best I can describe it.
